Goals, Setbacks, and the Road Ahead

Goals, Setbacks, and the Road Ahead

A few weeks ago, I shared my Misogi—my big, daunting challenge for the year. It’s something meant to push my limits, to redefine what I think I’m capable of. And like most challenges worth taking on, the path hasn’t been a straight line.

Lately, I’ve been dealing with a stubborn cough that’s kept me from running. It’s been frustrating, to say the least. When you set a goal and find your training rhythm, even a small setback—especially early on—can feel like a major setback. But that’s just the ego talking. The reality? Setbacks aren’t detours; they’re part of the journey.

Every challenge comes with obstacles—some expected, some out of left field. I knew my Misogi wouldn’t be easy, but I wasn’t counting on being sidelined by something as simple as a cough. It’s a reminder that progress isn’t always about relentless forward motion. Sometimes, it’s about learning to pause, to let the body recover, and to come back stronger.

Instead of beating myself up over missed miles, I’ve shifted my focus. Rest is part of the process. Building mental resilience isn’t just about pushing through pain; it’s also about knowing when to step back. The Misogi isn’t just about physical endurance—it’s about adaptation. If I can’t train one way, I can train another. Strength, mindset, and preparation take many forms.

The cough is gone, and soon, I’ll be back out there, pounding the pavement, recalibrating my pace. And when I do, I’ll bring with me a little more patience, a little more appreciation for the process. Because at the end of the day, the real challenge isn’t just completing the Misogi. It’s showing up for it, day after day, setback after setback, until the goal is met.

So, here’s to the grind, the pauses, and the push forward. The road stretches on, with countless miles still waiting.
